Is free always worth it?
So, I went garage sale-ing on Saturday and I was checking out a tipped-over vanity when the old lady said, “Are you interested in that? You can just have it! My husband said to sell it for $1 or just give it away.”
Well, and you know me and free. Yes indeed, I’ll take it!
Pretty cool, huh? Old vanity. I can just take that top part of and paint this into a cute little white desk for Maya’s room…
However, while taking the top off I noticed just how gross this thing was. Cobwebs, spider eggs, grass clippings, and what’s that smell!?! Cat pee? Hmm, surely not!
I cleaned it off with a wet rag. This rag was so gross after I was finished I just threw it away. Then I grabbed the Clorox wipes and I scrubbed that thing until it shined like the top of the Chrysler Building. And, I wasn’t done there. After that soaked in, I grabbed my can of Lysol Disinfecting Spray and I doused it with that.
Then came the Kilz.
I covered every part of this desk. Inside of the drawers, the back, the front, the sides, the top, the bottom. EVERY THING!
After the primer dried — lucky for me this only took an hour (I get quite impatient when I want something done) — I grabbed some white paint, mine wasn’t anything special, it was just a bright white latex that I got at Ace Hardware.
After I completely coated the whole desk and let it dry over night. I decided to do the smart thing…
Remove the knobs from the drawers. I should have done this to begin with.
Then I decided it was time to get out the roller.
After one coat of primer and two coats of paint, the wood is still coming through on this darn thing.
I decided to add another coat of primer, let that dry and add one more coat of paint.
I took a break. It was bunko night after all.
After one quick coat of primer on the top and sides this is what I have for my little girl’s room.
Totally worth it!
