Look with a neighbor’s eye
So, as I was mowing tonight I realized something. Tonight I realized how much mowing a lawn is like living your life.
Mowing usually isn’t easy. It’s certainly not always fun. It most definitely takes some work, but when it’s done it’s always worth it. While mowing, it’s hard not to notice all the imperfections. The weeds. The bare spots. The bumpy surface. All of these things are going to take so much work.
However, all of these things are blind to a neighbor’s eye. He sees the whole picture. He sees the freshly mowed grass as a beautiful green lawn. He never gets close enough to notice the imperfections. He doesn’t need to.
So, tonight when I finished mowing, I stepped back and smiled. It’s when I stepped back that I was able to enjoy the yard as a whole and the imperfections just faded away.
Almost daily, the weeds, the bare spots and the bumpy surface of my life are so prominent it’s hard not to notice them. All of these things are going to take so much work. It can turn into an overwhelming cycle.
Although it’s not easy, that’s when I have to tell myself to step back and look at my life with a neighbor’s eye.
